About
How I Became A Realtor
It’s a funny story really. I stepped into the world of real estate in 2014 quite by accident. Years earlier, my husband and I bought our first house, and the week we moved in, the house turned into a money pit. I soon realized that buying a house, with no idea what I was getting into, had been a very bad idea.
Property Inspectors And Sewage
I turned to the internet to learn all I could about real estate laws. I was mostly interested in finding out why the property inspector had found no flaws when we were buying the house. The house had been sitting empty for 2 years when we bought it. Being real estate novices, this didn’t send up a red flag to us! As soon as we moved in the shower backed up and sewage overflowed through the bathroom and into the bedroom, ruining the bedroom carpet. Plumbers snaked a camera into the pipes and told us the pipes had crumbled and had tree roots growing through them. That cost a pretty penny to fix! How did the property inspector miss that?
Ugh! Rats
A short while later we heard bumping in the attic. My husband stuck his head up there and saw a rat. We called in exterminators who told us we had a lot of rats. They had chewed through most of the electrical wiring and eaten massive holes in the air ducts. The whole house needed to be rewired and all the air ducts replaced. How could the inspector have missed THAT?
Angry beyond belief, I turned to the internet to learn all I could about how property inspections worked.
Just How Does Real Estate Work Anyway?
While searching, I was side tracked by an online course I found. It was a real estate licensing course. After mulling it over for a few days I decided to enroll in the course, just to learn about how real estate worked. I was hoping to find information about property inspections. I had no intention of taking the end of course exam.
Well, Why Not?
Half way through the course, I decided I might as well take the exam. Why not. I’d done all the studying. It didn’t matter if I failed, because I didn’t even want to be a real estate agent.
Well, don’t you know. I passed!
A big pop up appeared on my computer screen telling me to take the final step and schedule my State Real Estate Licensing test. After which I would be a fully licensed real estate agent. “What the heck”, I thought. I may as well!
State Test
On April 10, 2014 I passed the state test and became an unintended, fully licensed, real estate agent.
A few days later a Realtor friend of my husband’s found out I’d passed the test and asked what I was going to do next. I didn’t really understand the question, as I had no intention of doing anything in real estate.
I was quite happy in my current career, performing and teaching music.
And So It Begins
As it happened, my husband’s friend was not a Realtor, but a broker. He asked if I would like to join his company. He would teach me all I needed to know about working as a Realtor and I could work as many, or as few, hours as I wished. Well, why not!
It turned out that the more I learned about real estate, the more fascinated I became. I learned how to work with renters, buyers, sellers, and eventually even real estate investors. The more I learned, the more hours I put in, and real estate eventually took over my music career. I do still play music in public every now and then, but you’re much more likely to see me out showing houses nowadays.
Happily Ever After?
I guess all things happen for a reason. For me, buying an ‘ugly house’ turned into a whole new wonderful career.
